Carob
Ceratonia siliqua
An elegant large shrub or small tree with rounded, shiny leaves, small red flowers in autumn followed by long flat pods containing the carob bean. Pods contain nutritious beans which are used as a healthy substitute for chocolate. Species are dioecious with male and female plants. Please refer to our recipe guide for more ideas.
Cultural Notes:
Prefers a full sun position with well drained soil. Height can vary from 5m up to 15m. Tolerates dryness.
