The Cape Gooseberry is an easy to grow old fashioned shrub that branches freely, is self supporting and produces golden berries inside papery husks that look like straw coloured lanterns. The sweet golden berries are the size of a cherry tomato and have a pineapple flavour; they can be eaten raw or dried. The fruit can be used in jams, pies, coated in chocolate, added to salads or used in savoury dishes. Harvest when husks are brown and fruits are golden in late autumn and into winter - fruits can be picked and kept in their husks for months after harvesting.
